Geothermal Energy Efficiency

Our Geothermal heat pumps are more efficient because no fuel is used to produce heat. Instead, fuel in the form of electricity is used to relocate heat by operating electric motors to run pumps and fans. The heat that is gathered from the earth is renewed by the sun.

Geothermal heat pumps are nearly four times more efficient for space heating than fossil fuel burning equipment.  Our equipment has a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 3.70 to 3.90. This means that 3.7 to 3.9 units of energy are produced for every unit of energy used.

Geothermal heat pumps are also more efficient for summer cooling, using about 1/3 less electricity standard central air conditioning rated at 13 SEER. This is due chiefly to the constant temperature of the ground water.

Geothermal heat pumps are also efficient at producing hot drinking water. Our heat pumps include an internal "Heat Recovery Unit". In summer, the waste heat from air conditioning is used to partially heat the drinking water. In winter, the heat pump itself provides the hot water heating as well as the space heating. A standard electric or gas hot water heater is used to provide the final rise in water temperature.
